Dave Smith Mopho Controlled with a Novation X-Station

Recently Dave Smith Instruments released a 32 key version of their popular and affordable analog desktop synth, the Mopho. Unlike the painful menu diving interface of the desktop version, the Mopho keyboard offers plenty of hands on knob control of all the parameters.

While wishing I could afford to purchase the new mopho keys, I decided to create a midi template for my Novation X-Station 25. If you happen to own one of these great synth/controllers and a mopho please download my sysex template and upload it using the novation template editor. I made this template using CC messages (check page 32 of the mopho manual for the parameter list for CC's) but apparently you need NRPN messages to take full advantage of the mopho controls. Either way, this template will send you in the right direction if you haven't explored the midi side of your mopho.

  1. Dude! You are the man. I'm just getting into the x-station and I'm slowly working it out and I've recently purchased the mopho too so you're template definitely got me going in the right direction. I have a few (probably stoopid questions) Is it possible to pick your brains?

Cheers, you made my day. Man I love this controller! and once I fine tune the Mopho I'm excited to destroy dancefloors!

  3. Just wondering if (when playing live) if I have to take the audio outs from the Mopho only to send to the board? Does the sound not go through the x-station anyway? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just thought it would mean less cables as I use some sounds from the x-station and some from the Mopho. Thought it'd be cool if I could switch between the onboard synth and the Mopho just by pressing the play button on the x-station. Cheers, and apologies if this makes no sense.

  4. Hey,
With the midi connected there is no audio running through the x station from the mopho. Since the x station has an audio input you should be able to run an audio cable to the x station and then another cable running out of the x station. Then you can probably switch between the x station and mopho with the play button. When I get back in town in a few days I'll test it out myself.

  5. Cool, do you run it in stereo to the x-station? Or do you run a cable from the mopho and switch it to mono in global on the mopho. Not sure if I got it quite right yet. Good idea though,

  6. I have it working right now. I have the left audio out from the mopho going to input 1 on the x station (make sure input 1 is selected with the input button). Then, using output 1 from the x station, you can connect to your speakers, amp or headphones. Also make sure the mode button on the x station is set to bypass so you don't mix the x station effects with the mopho's signal. Now you can easily switch back and forth from the play/synth button. Hope this is clear.

  7. Just grabbed myself a Mopho desktop and thanks to this tasty little x-station template I am having an absolute riot with it! Not much activity round these parts but huge thanks for the template - much appreciated!!!

  8. Found this page via Google search. I know it's been ages, but I'm definitely interested in the x-station template for the Mopho if you still have it. The link here no longer works.

Might be a stretch, since this post was a decade ago, but it never hurts to try, eh? Thanks!
